Rigid and detachable towbar - differences.

Towbars or trailer hitches are divided into three groups: rigid (fixed), detachable and swivel. Since swivel trailer hitches are not used on RVs, they are not described in more detail here.

Rigid towbars are towing devices whose ball (also known as towball or hook) is firmly connected to the trailer device. The fixed connection is realized by means of screws. The hook is then not removable. Fixed or rigid trailer hitches are cheaper than the detachable ones due to their simple construction.

It is called a detachable trailer hitch when the towball can be removed with a mechanism. Detachable hitches differ greatly from each other. The cheapest towbars with a removable towball are usually equipped with a simple mechanism to remove the hook, for example, with levers, with an eccentric pin or a wedge. Such towballs usually have no anti-theft system.

A more advanced version of a detachable towbar is usually equipped with a rotating knob to secure and detach the towball. The knob is then additionally equipped with a lock and thus such a hitch has an anti-theft device.
