Levelling systems for motorhomes and caravans

Levelling systems for motorhomes and caravans

Lifting supports have a wide range of applications and are not limited to motorhomes. A lifting, levelling or stabilising systems are devices that can be used to place a vehicle in a desired, stable position.

Take a look at the systems that are available on the market and the products you can buy at X-CAMPING.

Types, differences, characteristics  - basic knowledge

Every camping enthusiast wants a stable motorhome. A stabilisation system allows you to keep the vehicle in a position where it is protected from external forces such as wind, weight changes due to movement, etc.

A stabilisation system is not only comfort equipment, but also a safety equipment. Comfort can be felt in everyday activities such as sleeping, cooking, showering, and eating. When a car is levelled, you usually don't notice or appreciate it, but when it's leaning, you feel it all the time.

We talk about safety when getting in and out of the car, going to the toilet, slipping with wet feet, etc.

That's why it's worth investing in a stabilisation system. A levelling system does not have to be expensive. There are many ways to stabilise a motorhome more or less horizontally, e.g:

There are several manufacturers and brands of lifting equipment in Europe, such as SMV-Metall, Goldschmitt, ALKO, Linnepe, AMPLO, TESA, ALUTRANS Hydraulics, LEMET, Bestcar, FIAMMA and many others. It might be interesting that although the products are often labelled with the names of well-known manufacturers, in many cases they are bought-in products offered with the dealer's logo.

Wedge systems, pneumatic jacks, or axle stands

Levelling blocks, pneumatic jacks (also known as air bag jacks) and axle stands are all types of aids used to stabilise and balance motorhomes, especially when they are parked on uneven ground. Their main advantage is price – these systems are the cheapest on market.

  • Levelling blocks: wedge systems consist of specially shaped wedges that are placed under the wheels of the motorhome to compensate for a sloping position and stabilise the vehicle on an uneven surface. They are often made of sturdy plastic or metal and can be found in different heights and inclinations to suit different terrains.
  • Pneumatic jacks: also known as air bag jacks, use pressurised air to lift and level the motorhome. They consist of flexible bellows that are placed under the vehicle and inflated by a compressor to lift the motorhome and stabilise it on a flat surface. These jacks usually offer a quicker and easier solution compared to traditional wedge systems.
  • Axle stands: these are sturdy, usually metal supports placed under the corners of the motorhome to lift and stabilise it. Often used in conjunction with other support systems, they provide additional stability and safety, especially on uneven terrain. Stands can be adjusted to different heights to suit different requirements.

Mechanical and electrical levelling jacks

  • Mechanical jacks for motorhomes: mechanical jacks are manually operated devices used to stabilise and raise motorhomes. They typically consist of a crank and a mechanism that allows the motorhome to be raised or lowered by turning the crank. These types of jacks require physical effort and can be slower than electric jacks but provide a reliable and cost-effective solution for levelling the vehicle.
  • Electric jacks: electric stabilizers are automated devices powered by an electric motor to stabilise and raise the motorhome. They can be operated by switch or remote control and provide a convenient and time-saving solution for levelling the vehicle. Electric levelling jacks are often quicker and easier to use than mechanical jacks but require a power source such as a battery or connection to the motorhome's electrical system.

Electric levelling system

Electric levelling systems are automated devices used in motorhomes to stabilise and raise the vehicle (usually fully automatically). They are powered by an electric motor that allows the stabilisers to be operated effortlessly and precisely. At the flick of a switch or remote control, the electric jacks can be activated to level the motorhome on uneven terrain and ensure a level surface. These jacks offer a convenient and efficient solution to levelling the vehicle compared to manual or mechanical jacking systems.

Hydraulic support systems

Hydraulic jacks for motorhomes are jacking systems that use hydraulic technology to level and lift the vehicle. They consist of hydraulic cylinders connected to a hydraulic system. Hydraulic pressure is generated at the flick of a switch or remote control, extending the cylinders, and raising the motorhome to compensate for uneven terrain and create a level surface. Hydraulic jacks are a reliable and efficient solution for levelling motorhomes. They are often quicker and easier to use than manual or mechanical jacking systems.

Eliminate uneven position in your motorhome!

Motorhome lifting support systems provide various options for levelling vehicles on uneven terrain and ensuring a stable position. These systems prioritize the safety and comfort of the occupants. Different types of jacks, including wedge systems, pneumatic jacks, axle stands, mechanical and electric stabilisers, and hydraulic systems, each have their own advantages and disadvantages in terms of ease of use, speed, and cost. To find the best solution for the motorhome, it's crucial to consider individual needs and requirements.
