Chassis extension for motorhomes for towbars
The 4th generation Ford Transit (Mk8, V363) is a popular base for motorhomes of all types - from Class A to Class C. A load-bearing frame extension is often required to mount a trailer hitch on motorhomes built on Ford Transit.
This frame extension is a complete solution designed specifically for the flat floor chassis of the Ford Transit Mk8 (V363). This chassis, also known as “low frame chassis” is characterised by lowering of 100 mm and a weight saving of almost 200 kg. weight saving. This makes it an ideal platform for motorhomes.
Purpose and design of the frame extension
The frame extension reinforces the overhang of the motorhome body and enables the installation of a load-bearing towbar. It consists of:
- Vehicle specific adapters
- Frame extension rails
- Tension struts
- Small parts and set of screws
The frame adapters are precisely connected to the side members of the vehicle frame and use the original mounting holes of the Ford Transit flat-floor chassis (from model year 2014). This ensures easy retrofitting without the need for any modifications to the vehicle frame.
The side members are fitted with reinforcing profiles to create a stable and load-bearing structure. Finally, a towbar can be mounted between the side members. The universality of the side members enables the installation of common towbars from leading manufacturers such as LEMET, XIMPLIO, SMV-Metall, Linnepe or SAWIKO.
Available lengths and customisation options
The chassis extension is available in various lengths from 120 to 160 cm so that the overhang and size of the rear garage can be customised. It is specially designed for the low-frame chassis variants L2, L3 and L4, which are frequently used in motorhomes. The selected length of the frame extension largely determines the size of the rear garage and ensures a perfect fit in your vehicle.
