Retrofitting a Towbar to an AL-KO Chassis – Here's How

The brand AL-KO is well-known among motorhome owners. Particularly recognised for its innovative lightweight chassis, which are specifically designed to meet the demands of leisure vehicles. With the introduction of the AL-KO AMC Chassis in 1985, the manufacturer set new standards in terms of weight, stability, and driving behaviour.

Compared to standard frames of flatbed vehicles, which are often heavy, high, and oversized, AL-KO offers a well-thought-out solution that meets the needs of modern motorhome owners. Although there are now other frame options like the semi-chassis from Fiat (CCS) or the Super-Light chassis from HYMER, the AL-KO chassis remains a leader in versatility and applications - especially for longer vehicles with single or double axles.

What are advantages of having towbar?

Despite the generous capacities of a motorhome with an AL-KO chassis, additional storage or transport options are often needed. A towbar significantly enhances your vehicle's versatility, allowing you to attach trailers for motorcycles, boats, or small cars, as well as rear carriers for bicycles or extra luggage.

Having a towbar increases your storage capacity and provides flexible transport solutions for various activities. It improves your travel experience by enabling you to carry more gear, making adventures more enjoyable. Additionally, it is a cost-effective solution compared to renting or buying a larger vehicle for transport needs.

XIMPLIO and LEMET towbars are designed for easy installation and ensure safety and stability when towing. They can also enhance your vehicle's resale value, as many buyers appreciate the added functionality. Overall, a towbar is a practical addition that offers convenience for both travel and everyday tasks.

Steps to Choose a Towbar for an AL-KO Chassis

Retrofitting a towbar to motorhomes with AL-KO frames is easier than many think. However, it is crucial to know the type of AL-KO chassis and the existing frame conditions.

AL-KO Chassis types

  • Connection to the Base Vehicle: AL-KO frames are often combined with drivetrain or powertrain from Fiat Ducato or Mercedes Sprinter, but also VW Transporter. Depending on the base vehicle, the connection points and the required adapters differ. The drivetrain consists of the transmission, axles, driveshaft, and differential, as well as the CV joints. The powertrain is composed of all of that PLUS the engine.
  • Axle Configuration: Motorhomes with single or double axles require different frame extensions or specific coupling solutions.

Frame extensions types

  • Integrated extensions: Many motorhome manufacturers already equip their vehicles with frame extensions. In such cases, only a universal towbar is required.
  • Frames without extension: If the chassis ends directly behind the rear axle, adapters or extension profiles are necessary to securely mount the towbar.

Suitable solutions

  • For vehicles with integrated frame extensions, only a towbar is required. Manufacturers like XIMPLIOor LEMET offer width-adjustable towbars with pre-drilled hole patterns, allowing for easy installation without re-drilling or modifications to the AL-KO frame.
  • For vehicles without frame extensions, a complete towing system is needed. This consists of special adapters that are bolted to the AL-KO frame, extension profiles, a towbar, and smaller mounting parts.

Important Notes: Consider Towing Capacities

Motorhomes with AL-KO frames often have lower towing capacities than RVs with standard frames. Particularly heavy and long models with tandem axles are frequently only approved for a few hundred kilograms of towing capacity, even though modern towbars from LEMET or XIMPLIO can be rated for up to 2.5 tonnes. It is crucial that the towing capacity of the frame is never exceeded.
