Retrofitting air suspension to the Fiat Ducato V with additional anti-roll bar

A guide for owners of motorhomes and panel vans

Over the years, the Fiat Ducato has established itself as one of the most popular base vehicles for motorhomes. Whether panel van (Class-B), Class-A, Class-C or coach built - the Ducato enjoys an excellent reputation among RVs and commercial companies alike.
All thanks to the comfort, versatility and durability of these vehicles.

Why should I install an air suspension system in my vehicle?

Although the Fiat Ducato types 250 (2006-2014), 290 (2014-2024) and 295 (the New Ducato from 2024) are factory-designed for authorised mass rating up to 3,500 kg, this limit is often exceeded in practice. For vehicles that are regularly heavily loaded, retrofitting air suspension is a sensible choice - both for driving comfort and safety.

By installing air suspension, the vehicle is better prepared for permanent loads. It improves stability, protects the existing suspension and ensures a smoother ride.

Why to retrofit motorhome with air suspension

Anti-roll bar and its influence on the air suspension

Since the facelift of the Fiat Ducato in 2024, an additional anti-sway bar has been available on the rear axle of some models. This so-called rear suspension sway bar connects the left and right sides of the chassis and provides additional stability, especially when the vehicle is loaded.

However, the anti-roll bar does have an influence on the retrofitting of air suspension. The air bags, the centrepiece of the air suspension, are attached to the mounting points of the standard shock absorbers. As the air bags are larger than the original part, they can collide with the stabiliser bar.

Mounting options for air lift on vehicles with stabiliser bar

  1. 1. Various brackets and adapters:
Many manufacturers offer special brackets or adapters to move the airbags in the direction of the vehicle's longitudinal axis. This increases the distance to the stabiliser bar and prevents possible collisions.
  2. Flexible mounting solutions:
Manufacturers such as XIMPLIO have developed brackets that are suitable for vehicles with and without stabiliser bars. These universal solutions make retrofitting much easier and minimise installation time.
  3. Choosing the correct air bag size:
Air bags are available in different sizes, for example 6 inches (Z6) or 8 inches (Z8). For vehicles with a stabiliser bar, the smaller version is often more suitable as it takes up less space.

Improved comfort and safety with right chosen set

Retrofitting air suspension to the Fiat Ducato 2024-, especially on models with an additional anti-roll bar, is a well-considered investment. It improves the stability of the vehicle, ensures greater safety and increases driving comfort - a must have for heavily loaded panel vans and motorhomes.
