Adjustable towbars for motorhomes from LEMET

Adjustable towbars for motorhomes from LEMET

Universal, height and width adjustable towbar

Retrofitting a towbar to motorhomes, especially A-Class and C-Class models, is a complex challenge. Standard towbars fitted to base vehicles are often unsuitable for integrated motorhomes, as motorhome bodies can vary considerably. This includes:

  • Varying vehicle lengths, often requiring a frame extension.
  • Different rear suspension heights.
  • Space requirements due to other installations such as water pipes, support systems or additional suspension.

Because of this variety, adjustable towbars are used for A-Class, C-Class and coachbulits with overcab bed motorhomes. LEMET towbars offer flexible adjustment options:

  • Width: Adjustable from 85 to 147 cm, allowing installation on almost any type of vehicle, from Mercedes Sprinter to Ford Transit and Fiat Ducato.
  • Height: When using a tow-bar, the towball should be between 35 and 42 cm high. UCAMP adjustable motorhomes towbar offers various height adjustments:
    • Special grid plates allow the entire device to be moved up or down.
    • Swivelling side arms allow the crossbar to be adjusted vertically.
    • A flexible flange towball may be mounted above or below the main crossbar to bring it into the desired position.
  • Length: The side arms have a variety of mounting holes that allow the crossbar to be moved along the axis of the vehicle. The towball can also be mounted in different positions to move it forward or backward.

This adaptability makes LEMET towbars the ideal solution for individual motorhome requirements, with reliability and functionality at the focus.

Regulated towbar for motorhomes – modular design

Although more complex to manufacture, the modular design of drawbars offers many advantages in terms of use, maintenance and conversion. Despite being listed as a single item in the manufacturer's product range, there are many variations. There are three main types of towbar:

  • Adjustable towbar with swanneck towball,
  • Universal towbar with flanged towball,
  • Horizontal detachable towbar with lockable towball.

The towbars can be quickly converted from fixed to detachable as the ball heads and their brackets on the main crossbar are universal so that any of the three towballs can be used.

This versatility is also reflected in the design. The drawbars are available in the following finishes:

  • A black version without hot-dip galvanising,
  • Hot-dip galvanised version,
  • Black coated with hot dip galvanised.

The hot-dip galvanised finish gives the drawbar an exceptionally long life, while the black colour creates a sophisticated look. LEMET is one of the few manufacturers to offer a combination of both processes without unnecessarily increasing manufacturing costs - a hot-dip galvanised towbar with a black towball. The main frame part, which is normally invisible, does not require additional painting. Only the towball, which is exposed, is given a special anti-corrosion treatment and then painted black by cathodic dip painting.

The towball undergoes several chemical treatments - from blasting, pickling and degreasing to phosphating and a final cathodic dip coating - to achieve a smooth and attractive surface with optimum corrosion protection.

These blended variants are particularly popular with motorhome manufacturers, wholesalers and large workshop franchises. They offer excellent value, optimum corrosion protection and an attractive finish.

The compactness of the motorhome towbar is another benefit of the modular design. The towbar can be stored in an unassembled state to save space, which is particularly advantageous for distributors and dealers, but also for end users who wish to purchase a towbar in advance and only install it when required.

Reacreational Vehicle towbar from LEMET

Motorhomes towbar – use it with or without frame extension

Installing a towbar on a A-Class, Couchbulit or Couchbulit with overcab bed motorhome requires special considerations due to the different vehicle designs. Depending on the specific structure of Your motorhome, there are different ways of mounting the towbar:

  • Direct mounting on the chassis: This method is often used on ALKO frames as well as standard base vehicle chassis.
  • Mounting on the frame extension: A common option for vehicles where the existing chassis needs to be extended to suit the specific vehicle requirements.
  • Mounting on extension profiles or grid plates: This technique offers flexible adaptation options for complex vehicle configurations.

The mounting points are designed to be universally adaptable to different vehicle types. They are compatible with a wide range of frames, including ALKO lightweight frames and frame extensions from manufacturers such as SMV-Metall, Linnepe, SAWIKO, Umbra Rimorchi and XIMPLIO. This versatility ensures that the towbar can be efficiently and safely adapted and fitted to almost any model.

Adjustable towbar for motorhome

Towbar suitable for heavy work and loaded motorhomes

LEMET's universal towbar stands out from the competition thanks to its exceptional flexibility and load capacity. Adjustable side arms that can be extended to a width of 147cm, what makes this towbar a ideal choice for vehicles such as the Fiat Ducato, Citroen Jumper and Peugeot Boxer, especially when fitted with frame extensions.

Unbeatable towing capacity of almost 2600kg

The towbar is tested and approved to a D-value of 14.6 kN. It allows loads up to 2589 kg to be towed on vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of 3500 kg.

As the maximum trailer load decreases with higher gross vehicle weights, this towbar is particularly suitable for heavy and loaded motorhomes. For example, a loaded Fiat Ducato with a gross vehicle weight of up to 4100 kg can still tow a trailer weighing up to 2336 kg.

The exact towing capacity for your specific vehicle model can be determined using a calculator on the TOWBARS-ONLINE website.

Huge 160 kg vertical capacity for heavy rear loaders

Towbars for recreational vehicles can be used for a wide range of applications, including towing city cars, boats, jet skis or motorcycles, that do not require a high towball capacity. Towing hitches are often used as load carriers, especially for caravans. These include various types of carrier such as rear boxes, rear bicycle racks and especially motorcycle carriers, where the maximum vertical load of towbar is crucial.

While most motorhome towbars have a towball vertical load of 90 to 150 kg, the UCAMP universal towbar has an impressive maximum vertical capacity of 160 kg. This high value means that even heavy motorcycle racks can be safely attached to the towbar without the need for an additional trailer. This greatly increases the flexibility and usability of the motorhome, making it an ideal companion for a wide range of leisure activities.
